The sort of things you would have observed if you were staying on a farm in that country are described, and then round all that, in the usual Ballantyne manner, has been wrapped an interesting tale, so that the book becomes both instructive and absorbing...

To see the transcribed text with images (if possible) use the FB2 version. "The Red Man's Revenge" is very authoritatively written, because its setting is the Red River, where Ballantyne had spent all those years in his youth. As so often with Ballantyne's books there are the threads of two stories running throughout. One of these, occupying the last two-thirds of the book, concerns the Red River flood of May 1826, when the river rose fourteen feet over a largely level plain, causing much loss a...

[texts]RM_Ballantyne_Saved_by_the_Lifeboat - R.M. Ballantyne (1825-1894)
This book is mainly to describe the lifeboat service, and how private individuals can donate the money for building a new lifeboat. We start off with a wreck just occurring near a little seaside village, and how the local men rushed down to the beach to do what they could to save life. We then move to the offices of a mean grasping shipowner, who will do anything to avoid properly equipping his ships with what they would need if disaster struck...
